My Favourite Photos from 2016

Looking back over photos that I’ve taken for the Streets of Dublin project for the past year, some interesting things stand out. For one thing, I seem to have taken a lot of photos of Stephen’s Green for whatever reason. Secondly, there has been a lot of change in the city over the course of the year. Buildings have gone up and come down, and of course, the Luas work has caused a lot of changes. It’s fascinating to look back and see this now in hindsight. At the start of the year, the area around Stephen’s Green was all torn up and pretty much just a big hole. Now it’s almost complete. The tracks have been laid, and most of the cobblestones around them are finished. There are new buildings on the canal and throughout the city, and on Dawson street, there’s a big hole where a building used to be, which has let in light and changed the way the rest of the street looks. These are just a few examples.

I typically keep a running collection of images that I mark as five stars during the year. This doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re particularly great or anything, just that I like them at the time for whatever reason. Now that we’re at the end of the year, that’s accumulated quite a bit, and going through it to find the “best” shots for this post hasn’t been the easiest of tasks. There were nearly 5000 images in this collection, and I needed to narrow them down to something a bit more manageable to post.

Picking your favourite shots is hard. Sometimes you’ll look at the same set of photos at two different times, and you’ll see different things that you like. You can look at the same image, and it will make the cut one time and not another. I also find that I like certain pictures for different reasons. Sometimes it will be because it tells a storey. Other times it will be because there is particularly nice light or texture in the photo. Other times it may be because I like the composition or how shapes form in an image. Sometimes it will be a combination of all of the above. But it’s hard.

So here’s a little look back at some of the pictures of Dublin city that I took over the past 12 months. They’re not in any particular order. Were I to go through them again in another little while I’d probably pick a whole different set, but for now, are are some of our favourites for you to enjoy, and I hope you all have a happy new year and a great 2017.
